Sourdough English Muffin Breakfast Sandwiches

Sourdough English Muffin Breakfast Sandwiches

A homemade breakfast sandwich is one of the easiest ways to turn our sourdough English muffins into a hearty breakfast. The best part? There are no rules! Choose your favorite breakfast meat, add an egg or leave it off, pile on some cheese, and finish it with your favorite spread.

They're perfect for a slow weekend breakfast or made ahead for busy mornings.

For a Fresh Breakfast Sandwich

1. Toast Your English Muffin

Split your sourdough English muffin and toast it until golden and crisp on the edges.

Add a little butter while it's warm if you'd like.

2. Cook Your Meat

Warm your ham or Canadian bacon in a skillet until heated through.

For bacon, cook until your preferred level of crispness.

For sausage, cook the patty thoroughly and allow it to brown nicely on both sides.

3. Cook Your Egg

Prepare your egg however you like it—fried, scrambled, or folded.

For meal-prep sandwiches, we especially like a folded or scrambled egg because it stays neatly inside the English muffin.

4. Build Your Sandwich

Start with the bottom half of your toasted English muffin.

Layer on:

Meat → egg → cheese → favorite spread → top of English muffin

If you're adding cheese, put it directly on the hot egg or meat so it gets nice and melty.

Then dig in!

Make-Ahead Breakfast Sandwiches

Breakfast sandwiches are perfect for meal prepping. Make a batch on the weekend and have breakfast ready to grab throughout the week.

1. Prepare Your Ingredients

Cook your breakfast meat and eggs as you normally would.

For eggs, we recommend making scrambled or folded eggs rather than runny fried eggs for the best make-ahead texture.

Allow the cooked ingredients to cool before assembling your sandwiches.

2. Assemble

Split your sourdough English muffins and layer:

English muffin → meat → egg → cheese → English muffin

For make-ahead sandwiches, I recommend leaving wet spreads and fresh vegetables off until you're ready to eat. This keeps the English muffin from becoming soggy.

Wrap each sandwich individually in parchment paper or foil, then place the wrapped sandwiches in a freezer-safe bag or container.

3. Refrigerate or Freeze

Refrigerator: Keep prepared sandwiches refrigerated and enjoy within 3–4 days.

Freezer: For longer storage, freeze the individually wrapped sandwiches. For best quality, enjoy within 1–2 months.

Label your sandwiches with the flavor and date so you know exactly what you've got ready to go!

How to Reheat

From the Refrigerator

Remove the wrapping and place the sandwich on a microwave-safe plate.

Microwave until heated through, usually about 1–2 minutes, depending on your microwave. Let it rest for a minute before eating.

For a crispier English muffin, finish it in a toaster oven or air fryer.

From Frozen

For the best results, thaw the sandwich overnight in the refrigerator.

Then remove the wrapping and microwave until heated through, finishing in a toaster oven or air fryer if desired.

You can also reheat directly from frozen; it will simply take longer. Make sure the center is steaming hot throughout before eating.

Tip: If you're meal prepping several sandwiches, write the reheating instructions right on the freezer bag so breakfast is practically effortless.
